I recently visited Chowmahalla Palace in Hyderabad, and it was honestly one of the most beautiful and memorable places I explored in the city. The palace gives you a wonderful glimpse into the royal history, architecture, and lifestyle of the Nizams of Hyderabad. From the moment you enter, the grand courtyards, detailed architecture, huge halls, and beautifully maintained surroundings immediately catch your attention. The Khilwat Mubarak is especially impressive. The massive chandeliers and the overall design of the hall create a very royal atmosphere, and it is easy to imagine how grand the place must have been during the Nizam era. There are also many historical items, photographs, vintage cars, and other displays that make the visit more interesting and help you understand the history behind the palace. I also really liked walking around the different courtyards and taking in the architecture from different angles. The place is quite photogenic, so there are plenty of opportunities to take good pictures. The peaceful atmosphere is another nice change from the busy streets of Hyderabad. The palace is quite large, so I would recommend keeping at least 1.5–2 hours to explore it properly rather than rushing through. Comfortable footwear would also be a good idea. Overall, Chowmahalla Palace is definitely worth visiting if you are interested in history, architecture, photography, or Hyderabad’s royal heritage. It is one of those places that gives you a completely different perspective of the city, and I would happily recommend it to anyone visiting Hyderabad.

Located near Charminar, this place showcases beautiful old architecture and is great for photography. A small parking lot is available, and if you arrive early, you may find a spot for ₹50. The entry ticket costs ₹150, which I personally feel is a bit overpriced. Washrooms and a canteen are also available on the premises. You can comfortably spend 1–2 hours here exploring the architecture and clicking pictures. Overall, it’s worth a visit if you enjoy heritage buildings and photography!

Restored meticulously to its past glory, it is easily one of the most elegant, serene, and well-curated royal palaces in India. The Highlights & Royal Architecture: * Khilwat Mubarak (The Grand Durbar Hall): The centerpiece of the palace is truly jaw-dropping. The soaring ceilings are adorned with 19 massive, pure Belgian crystal chandeliers that illuminate the royal marble throne (Takht-e-Nishan) with majestic grandeur. * The Vintage Car Collection: Automobile and history buffs will fall in love with the garage pavilion, featuring the famous 1912 canary-yellow Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost alongside vintage motorcycles, carriages, and classic royal motorcars. * Clock Tower & Northern Courtyard: The antique mechanical clock above the main gate—ticking continuously for well over a century—and the pristine lush green lawns framed by fountain pools make every corner a photographer's delight. * Curated Royal Exhibits: The palace displays private collections of royal costumes, exquisite crockery, historic weapons, coins, and rare archival photographs giving an intimate view into the lives of the Nizams. Visited Chowmahalla Palace on 26/09/2026 with family. The palace is truly magnificent and gives you a wonderful glimpse into Hyderabad’s royal history. The grand Darbar Hall, chandeliers, vintage cars and bikes, royal furniture, jewellery, weapons, crockery, manuscripts, photographs and other collections are fascinating. I was especially surprised by the old photo-printing-on-mugs display — something we still commonly do today as personalised gifts. One important tip for future visitors: do not plan this as a one-hour visit. We entered around 4 PM and had very little time before closing. Security repeatedly rushed visitors with whistles and instructions to move as sections were closing, and we literally had to run through some areas just to see them. Because of that, we could not properly read, observe or appreciate many of the exhibits. I would personally keep at least 3–4 hours, preferably 4–5 hours excluding travel, if you want to experience the palace at a relaxed pace. One thing to be aware of is the costume photography section near the beginning. We were directed inside without initially realising that it was an optional paid activity, and around 30–45 minutes went into the costume, photography and photo-selection process. The activity itself is fine for those interested, but a clear signboard before entering, stating that it is optional and mentioning the charges, would help visitors decide beforehand—especially those arriving late or having limited time. The ₹50 mobile photography charge also needs a clearer and more practical system. We paid for one mobile, but saw people using multiple phones for photography, and there was no visible way to know which devices had paid the photography fee. If the charge is per mobile, the palace could register or tag the permitted device at entry and have a proper verification system for additional phones, or otherwise secure/identify devices that are not covered. Without some form of identification, the policy can feel unclear and unfair to visitors who have paid. A transparent system that is applied consistently to everyone would make a big difference. The palace is well maintained overall, including the washrooms, and there are plenty of places to sit and relax. There is also a canteen/snack area. A guide can add useful historical context, while a room-wise audio or recorded guide would be a great addition for visitors who want to understand the exhibits without necessarily hiring a guide. I would also love to see extended evening or night visiting hours. The Darbar Hall, chandeliers and palace architecture would look even more spectacular under proper night lighting. An evening slot until around 7–8 PM, even with a separate ticket, could offer a completely different experience. Better lighting in some of the rooms would also help visitors appreciate the exhibits and take photographs. Overall, Chowmahalla Palace is a remarkable heritage site and definitely deserves time. Our biggest regret was arriving late and having to rush through it. Next time, I would plan 4–5 hours simply to explore, read, sit, take photographs and experience the grandeur without being rushed.
