A Hidden Coastal Gem of Palghar District If you’re a lover of history, scenic beauty, and quiet exploration, then Shirgaon Fort in Palghar district, Maharashtra should definitely be on your travel list. This beautiful historical site, located near Shirgaon Beach in Palghar taluka, is one of the lesser-known but highly rewarding forts to explore along the Konkan coast. Unlike many big forts that feel crowded or commercialized, Shirgaon Fort greets you with a unique sense of calm. The fort stands at about 200 feet tall and spans roughly 150 feet, and it was historically used as a look-out post for monitoring enemy movement from the Arabian Sea. Walking to the fort is a pleasant experience — a short, simple walk from the village takes you to its base. The pathway is easy and friendly for all ages, with no steep trekking required. Once inside, the fort’s brick and red-stone construction showcases how different rulers — from the Portuguese to the Marathas and then the British — reinforced and maintained it over centuries. One highlight that captivated me was the 5-foot cannon placed on the northwest citadel — a powerful reminder of the fort’s strategic role in times of war. Also intriguing was a rare multi-branched palm tree within the fort premises, something you won’t easily find elsewhere. The fort’s stone walls, bastions, hidden caves, and parapets are still in remarkably good condition, allowing you to wander around freely and enjoy every corner. It’s perfect for visitors who love photography, history, and views — especially during sunrise or sunset when the Arabian Sea sparkles in the horizon. What makes Shirgaon Fort exceptionally appealing is its serene atmosphere. There’s no entry fee, it doesn’t feel commercialized, and it rarely feels crowded — giving you space to absorb the history and nature at your own pace. Since the fort is adjacent to Shirgaon Beach, you can easily combine a historical tour with a refreshing seaside visit — an ideal day-trip for families, couples, solo travellers or history lovers. In short, Shirgaon Fort is a captivating hidden treasure — not too big, not too crowded, but rich in heritage, coastal charm, and visual beauty. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, it’s a must-visit spot if you’re exploring forts in Maharashtra or just want a peaceful, meaningful getaway

It is the best fort in Shirgaon, Palghar, Maharashtra to visit. This fort was built by Portuguese but later captured by Marathas to take control and keep an eye on sea Trade and enemy. This fort is clean and well maintained. It has one canon on fort. It also has some hidden place inside fort. This fort is on road near Shirgaon beach and there is no entry fee. Must visit this historic place! It is our responsibility to know our culture and history and to protect and preserve such great things left behind by our great king and warriors. 🙏❤️😌

I am really amazed by visiting this historic place in palghar dist. Its really well maintained and clean. Located just beside the road. Car parking may be an issue during weekends due to narrow road and no parking space as such here. No entry fee required. Entire fort is well maintained and is solid good condition.
