Elephanta Caves is an amazing historical and spiritual place and a must-visit when you are in Mumbai. The rock-cut caves are truly impressive and show excellent ancient Indian craftsmanship. The main attraction is the beautiful stone carvings, especially the famous Trimurti sculpture of Lord Shiva, which leaves a lasting impression. The caves are peaceful, rich in history, and give a deep sense of India’s cultural heritage. The ferry ride from Gateway of India adds to the experience and offers nice views of the sea. The island is well managed, with clear pathways, food stalls, and resting spots along the way. A little walking and climbing is required, so comfortable footwear is recommended. Apart from that, everything is well worth it. Overall, Elephanta Caves is a wonderful experience for families, history lovers, and tourists. Highly recommended and easily deserves a 9.5/10 rating. Charges - 5 rs/adult, 3 rs/child by Dharapuri village panchayat and 35 rs/adult to enter in caves area. Food recommendations: Kokam sarbat, Bhuna hua makkai, Vadapav near cave-5. Do not buy anything as the price of everything is 20x from real value.

Visiting the Elephanta Caves was one of those experiences that instantly transports you to another era. Just a short ferry ride away from the bustle of Mumbai, this ancient cave complex feels like stepping into a different world—quiet, mysterious, and absolutely awe-inspiring. 🚤 The Journey Begins The ferry ride from Gateway of India itself sets the tone. As you watch the skyline fade and the sea breeze kick in, you already feel like you’re heading toward something special. Once you reach the island, the walk up is lively—local snacks, tiny shops, and yes, a few mischievous monkeys keeping you entertained. 🗿 Stepping Into Ancient Craftsmanship The moment you enter the main cave, the massive Trimurti sculpture of Lord Shiva hits you like a wave—majestic, calm, and almost alive. The intricate carvings, the play of light and shadow, and the sheer scale of everything make you feel completely humbled. You can’t help but pause and soak it in. 📸 A Photographer’s Paradise Every corner has something unique—carved pillars, mythological panels, and natural textures of volcanic rock. Whether you’re into serious photography or just love taking aesthetic pictures, you will not leave without a full gallery. 🌴 A Laid-Back Island Vibe What I loved most was the relaxed mood of the island. Even with tourists around, it never felt chaotic. The greenery, the sea views, and the quieter corners make it a perfect spot to take a break and just breathe.

Elephanta Caves the spellbound example of art, sculpture and patience. The journey starts from the gateway, takes 1&1/2 hrs almost to reach there. Just after reaching it's better to take the mini train it gives a good experience too. One have to walk covering many steps. There is a cannon hill too. One can visit this place too for good views. The main elephanta caves is mesmerizing. The main cave aka Cave 1 most of the sculptures are there. Though most of the sculptures are mutilated but whatever is left is still spellbound. The major carving the Trimurti sculpture is a perfect example of what art looks like. What constructive thing humans can do. This cave also carries the example of destruction too as one can find many bullet marks on the sculptures as we know the French used to practise shooting on those beautiful sculptures. Most of the carvings are mutilated because of human intervention. The rest caves are small doesn't carry much and few carvings. This place deserve much preservation.

The 1st cave was very well kept but sadly the rest of the caves had close to nothing due to all the statues being destroyed. Do note that it's best to get your tickets online for the best and convenience if not you can still pay with cash but it's done the 'indian' way.
