Even though it was raining on the day I visited, they continued working without hesitation, showing remarkable resilience and dedication. Dhobi Ghat is more than just a famous laundry—it reflects the determination and spirit of the people who keep this city running every day. What struck me most was the extraordinary contrast between wealth and poverty. Just a short distance away stand modern skyscrapers, while here, generations of workers continue their daily routines with incredible perseverance. If you want to experience the real Mumbai beyond the typical tourist attractions, this is a place well worth visiting.

Places like these in Mumbai are often stereotyped in Western countries as proof of a lower standard and quality of life, but there is actually plenty of community and resourcefulness in the process. Came on a tour but the people who use the facility are very friendly and explained how it is beneficial to many people.

2 months agoVisiting the Dhobi Ghat laundry in Mumbai was definitely a once in a lifetime experience. It’s such a historic and fascinating place to see, with hundreds of people working together. Watching the process up close was very interesting and something completely different. It’s crowded, busy, smelly and intense, so while I do recommend visiting at least once, it’s probably not something I would do again.

5 months agoDhobhi Ghat is a living part of Mumbai’s history, existing long before the city’s skyline took shape. It is the Mecca of open air laundries. This tightly knit community continues its work every day, regardless of weather, season or circumstance. With proper financial and legal support to set up independent laundry houses, they could not only preserve this heritage but also elevate their livelihoods. They already have the skill. What they need is support.
