In 2016, historical facet of the edifice came to light after a temporary wall of an underground tunnel was razed. A British-era bunker, spread across 15,000 sq ft, was uncovered. Built before World War I, the 13-room bunker was equipped with ammunition to meet any contingency. It now opened for public, one can visit this place during their Raj bhavan tour. It has many artefacts of famous freedom fighters and some insights of our Indian history is put up at the musuem.

The Bunker Museum is covered as a part of the Raj Bhavan morning tour. It was built by the Britishers and remained closed and undiscovered for 6 decades. It was discovered in 2016, by the then governor Vidyasagar Rao. The tour has limited time and doesn't give justice to this 150 m long underground bunker. It is undergoing renovations/ upgradations and is expected to be open more often to the public.

The museum is located inside the private grounds of the mansion where the governor of Maharashtra lives. The only way for the public to visit is to request tickets for the early morning (0545) tour. This requires registering on the government website weeks in advance. Search for 'Raj Bhavan Maharashtra Sunrise Tour' to apply.
