Whether you're a history buff or just looking for a pocket of peace in the city, here is a review of this ancient site. The Experience: A Step Back in Time The Mahakali Caves are a group of 19 rock-cut Buddhist monuments dating from the 1st Century BCE to the 6th Century CE. Carved directly into solid black basalt rock, these caves served as a quiet retreat for Buddhist monks long before Mumbai became a financial hub. The Architecture Cave 9 (The Main Attraction): This is the largest and most significant cave. It features a Chaitya (prayer hall) with a stupa and a unique semicircular wall. Look closely at the walls—even though they have weathered over 2,000 years, you can still see mutilated figures of Buddha and characters from Buddhist mythology. The Viharas: The other caves are mostly Viharas (monasteries). These are small, stark cells where monks lived and meditated. Their simplicity is a powerful contrast to the modern skyscrapers visible in the distance. The View: Located on a small hill, the site offers a panoramic view of the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR). 3 months agoMahakali Caves is a true time capsule tucked in modern Mumbai—2nd to 6th century Buddhist caves resting quietly amid today’s high-rises. From Ghatkopar Metro it’s just a 15-minute Uber or auto ride. I met an eagle, two self-appointed feline guardians, and a few kind locals. Entry fee is online only, no cash. On the way back, a bus to Ghatkopar Metro leaves right from the entrance every 15–30 minutes. Ancient stone, modern skyline—beautifully side by side. 🙏🪷The Cave Guardians🪷🙏 the two majestic cats, wallowing in light like it is their birthright, teaching us to relax, rest, intuition, and gentle boundaries— reminding me that peace can purr. The eagle of the open sky, Swooping down on an ancient rock, drinking from a small, shining puddle, showing how strength bows to simplicity before it rises again. Stone, sun, fur, feather— I walk on, lighter, carrying gratitude wherever I go. 🐾🦅☀️

4 months agoI recently visited the Mahakali Caves in Andheri. It's an Archaeological site, and even though the place isn't very big, there are quite a few caves to explore. The entry ticket is ₹20, but you have to buy it online-there's no ticket counter or person at the gate, so you need to get it from their website before entering. The place is well-maintained and clean. There are guards around, which makes the area feel safe and also helps maintain the site properly. Overall, it was a nice experience visiting the caves, and definitely worth checking out if you're nearby.

a month agoI visited Mahakali Caves in Andheri East Mumbai on a Sunday and it was quite empty. It was kept nice and clean. It has a small prayer hall called Chaitya. There are also few Buddhist carvings. This is a must visit spot for all history lovers and Buddhists. The best part is that the entry fee is only ₹20 for adults and free for children.

a month ago2000 years old Buddhist caves in the heart of Mumbai. It's a precious gem of Indian History. Archeological Survey of India is charging from the visitors but the basic requirements of site information is missing. There is no basic information about the caves are displayed at the site.
